4th Symposium on Diabetes in Humanitarian Crises

We are pleased to announce the 4th Symposium on Diabetes in Humanitarian Crises, taking place on May 9-10, 2024 at the Royal Olympic Hotel in Athens, Greece. Virtual attendance options will be available. The symposium is hosted by the International Alliance for Diabetes Action (IADA) in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Centre for Global Chronic Conditions, Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, and Brigham and Women's Hospital and generously supported by The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.

Purpose

To provide a platform for shared learning, exchange, and development of collaborative initiatives between key agencies involved in diabetes care for people experiencing humanitarian crisis. 

Meeting objectives

  1. Discuss current crises, practices, guidelines, and resources to identify challenges and opportunities in provision of diabetes care in humanitarian settings.
  2. Enhance the exchange between organizations involved in diabetes care in humanitarian crises with identification, agreement, and commitment around areas of collaborative work. 
  3. Review progress and updates made to the IADA strategic work plan 2023-2025.

Expected outcomes

  • A meeting report that outlines current progress on the 2023-2025 strategic priorities, emerging challenges and unmet needs, and recommendations on the next steps forward. 
  • For ongoing collaborative projects discussed in a breakout session, a refined action plan. 
  • For new collaborative projects discussed in a breakout session, networks to be established and concrete action items to be outlined.
